Prayer Shawl Ministry

“Shawls . . . made for centuries, are universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify.”

Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient, known or unknown.  These intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl.  Upon completion the shawl is blessed during a Sunday worship service to reflect the sacredness of this ministry as we reach out with love.

Prayer Shawl ministries were growing in congregations across the country as knitters and those who crochet were meeting together in fellowship and friendship.  Stories from other churches led to the beginnings of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Congregational Church.  A group of knitters began meeting weekly in July 2006, forming a ministry of warm and embracing outreach through the work of many hands. Shawls have been given to individuals in need of comfort and hope while facing a difficult life experience, illness or transition.  Other shawls are given in celebration and to honor special occasions and relationships.

The Ministry is grateful for the individual donations and funds from the Outreach Committee that financially sustain the Ministry.  The purchase of yarn when “the price is right” makes it possible to assemble kits for the shawls.
