Just Peace Working Group
The Just Peace Working Group (JPWG) consists of members who came together to understand the role of systemic racism in our country. Formed in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder in 2020, we sought to learn about the role of racism in our society, culture, history, laws, economy, government, education and churches. We also wanted to understand the effects of constant discrimination on people of color, and gain insights into our own assumptions and unrecognized biases. We began with self-education. We read extensively and discussed our findings. We extended our research to webinars, online forums and guest speakers. We shared our insights with the congregation by means of book reviews and discussion groups.
We moved into community action by spearheading two generous 4-year scholarships for local students of color with financial need. Donors include members and friends of FCCSB as well as contributions from the church itself. The congregation has come to know our delightful young women recipients and enjoy following their progress.
We have broadened our scope to include other social justice issues such as homelessness, poverty, the environment, incarceration, and family-based needs. Guest speakers have participated in worship to inform us how these issues impact us locally. We share information about webinars, meetings and other opportunities to respond locally and nationally. We have all taken actions in our personal lives to respond to these issues.
We meet twice a month via Zoom on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7:30 pm. We discuss current events and share ideas for how we might help. We are still learning and welcome new faces. For the Zoom link, contact Moderator Martha Peyton, mmpeyton@gmail.com.
